The following information concerning the treatment of Jehovah's Witnesses in Belarus was provided by a representative of the Watch Tower and Bible Tract Society of Canada in correspondence dated 22 October 2002:
Jehovah's Witnesses have been legally registered as Religious Association of Jehovah's Witnesses in the Republic of Belarus since April 14, 1997. There is no official persecution of Jehovah's Witnesses in Belarus
The representative also stated that "there still may be isolated cases of individuals persecuted for their religious beliefs by local authorities or members of the public who are acting independently" (22 Oct. 2002).
This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
