The Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) website indicates that the Canadian mission in Algiers, Algeria does not have visa service lines for immigrants, visitors, workers or students and that it does not provide immigrant or non-immigrant processing (Canada 13 Aug. 2002). For immigrant and non-immigrant processing, applicants are referred to the mission in Paris (ibid.). In the information provided about the Paris visa office, CIC indicates that this location is responsible for immigrant and visitor applications from Algeria, among other countries (ibid. 28 June 2002a).

Further to this, the Canadian Embassy in Paris provides the following statement:

By decision of the government of Canada, it is the Canadian Embassy in Paris which is responsible for the study of visa applications for persons residing in Algeria. The Canadian Embassy in Algiers simply receives the payment of the fees and sends the application to Paris.

The Embassy in Paris will notify you of its decision in writing. If the application is refused, the reasons will be given. If the application is approved, you will be invited to present your passport to the Canadian Embassy in Algiers which will issue the visa (ibid. 28 June 2002b).

Please find attached a copy of the requirements for submitting applications and the process for issuing visitor visas from Algeria, as published by the Canadian embassy in Paris.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
