Queries:
Does marriage to a citizen of Ghana automatically confer permanent resident status or citizenship upon the spouse?
Response:
Article 7, Clause 1 of the Ghanaian constitution states that a man who is married to a citizen of Ghana can become a Ghanaian citizen himself, provided that he submits an application "in the manner prescribed by Parliament" (see attachment). Clause 6 of Article 7 clarifies that Clause 1 is only applicable if the man seeking citizenship permanently resides in Ghana. An official at the Embassy of Ghana was unable to provide additional information (Embassy of Ghana 20 July 1999).
