According to information provided by the Embassy of Spain in Ottawa, refugee status is not automatically lost by a person who leaves Spain for more than one year (28 Apr. 1997). As established by law, a refugee can only lose this status when he or she willingly obtains the protection of his or her own country (país de su nacionalidad) or when he or she has willingly settled in, and the responsibility has been transferred to, another country (ibid.).
