On 10 February 2000 an official at the Embassy of Mongolia in Washington, DC stated that Mongolian men are conscripted into the armed forces between the ages of 18 and 25 for a one-year tour of duty. Mongolian men receive their conscription notices through the government of the local administrative unit (sum) where they live. The official did not provide information on penalties for draft evasion.
A 1998 publication by War Resisters International on conscription worldwide states that Mongolian men are liable for military service between the ages of 18 and 28, and that most men perform their military service at the ages of 19 or 20 (Sept. 1998).
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
