OSH, Kyrgyzstan – A group of alleged members of the banned Islamist Hizb-ut Tahrir group have been arrested in Kyrgyzstan's southern province of Osh.
The regional police department's press secretary Zamir Sydykov told journalists on July 1 that three of the arrested suspects are young women between 18 and 20 years old and are students at prestigious schools.
Sydykov did not give the exact number of those who were arrested but said one is the director of a popular television youth program and another used to work as a cameraman at a local television station.
Investigators say the group was distributing extremist ideas via YouTube and other websites.
The Kyrgyz government and other former Soviet republics have banned the London-based Sunni political group Hizb ut Tahrir, branding its supporters as "extremists."
