Kyrgyz lawmakers have adopted a resolution calling on the Supreme Court to transfer former speaker Akmatbek Keldibekov, who is being held on corruption charges, from pretrial detention to house arrest.
According to the parliament's request, adopted on June 25, Keldibekov urgently needs medical treatment abroad.
A court decision on Keldibekov's transfer to possible house arrest is due on June 27.
Keldibekov, a member of the opposition Ata-Jurt (Fatherland) party, was arrested in November and charged with abuse of office and financial misdeeds while running the State Social Fund and Tax Service.
He also served as parliament speaker between 2010 and 2011.
Keldibekov's supporters blocked a highway in southern Osh Province from May 27 to June 22, demanding Keldibekov's transfer to house arrest.
They say his case is politically motivated.
