Information is scarce on the current status of the Movimiento Popular Democrático (MPD) among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate. According to an El Comercio article, the MPD has been in existence for 20 years and was the first party to present its two candidates, María Eugenia Lima and Ricardo Ramírez, for the positions of president and vice-president, in the last presidential elections held on 31 May 1998 (20 Mar. 1998).

With former vice-president Rosalia Arteaga, María Eugenia Lima is the only female contender to have run for the presidency in the 1998 elections (LAWR, 26 May 1998). In addition to various positions she has held in the National Congress and her presidency of the MPD in the province of Chimborazo, María Eugenia Lima is the former vice-president of the governmental Commission on Children, the Family and Human Rights (Comisión del Niño, la Familia y los Derechos Humanos) (El Comercio, 20 Mar. 1998).

With a total of 62,271 votes the MPD came sixth in the 1998 presidential election. It won two seats in the National Congress election held the same day on 31 May 1998 (31 Aug. 1998).

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
