A Syrian government delegation has held talks with Russian officials in Moscow on proposals to end the Syrian conflict.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said on December 27 that a Syrian delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Makdad met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Their meeting comes ahead of talks expected on December 29 in Moscow involving Lakhdar Brahimi, the international envoy on the Syrian crisis. '

Brahimi earlier this week met in Damascus with President Bashar al-Assad and other officials.

Russia, a longtime ally and weapons supplier to the Syrian regime, says it is not protecting Assad, but wants Syrians themselves to negotiate a resolution to the conflict.

Moscow has criticized Western and Arab states who have backed antigovernment rebels.
