Two of its leaders, Mohamed Mouadda (chairman) and Khemais Chammari , the first sentenced to 12 years in prison in October 1995, the second to 5 years in July 1995, were released conditionally from jail on 30 December 1996 (Comité pour le respect des libertés 7 June 1998; AI 31 Dec. 1996). The MDS was ordered by government to refrain from any political activity (Comité pour le respect des libertés 7 June 1998).
