For background information on the Democratic Socialist Movement or Mouvement des démocrates socialistes (MDS) in Tunisia, please refer to Political Handbook of the World 1997 which is available in Regional Documentation Centres.

Two of its leaders, Mohamed Mouadda (chairman) and Khemais Chammari , the first  sentenced to 12 years in prison in October 1995, the second to 5 years in July 1995, were released conditionally from jail on 30 December 1996 (Comité pour le respect des libertés 7 June 1998; AI 31 Dec. 1996). The MDS was ordered by government  to refrain from any political activity (Comité pour le respect des libertés 7 June 1998).

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
