Investigative journalist Regina Martínez was murdered in April 2012. She was found in the bathroom of her home in Xalapa in the state of Veracruz, having been beaten and strangled to death.
Regina was a correspondent for the respected magazine Proceso, and regularly wrote on issues relating to drug cartels, human trafficking and state corruption. Veracruz is one of the most dangerous areas of Mexico and is on the human trafficking route to the United States.
In November 2012 a suspect confessed to the murder and said that robbery had been the motive. When the suspect appeared in court, he admitted that the lives of his family had been threatened and that he had been pressured into giving a false confession.
Regina's colleagues say they believe Regina was killed as a result of her work revealing links between organised crime and the state.
