Page 1 of a letter sent to the DIRB on 30 September 1996 by the Consul General of the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Montreal states:
Czech citizenship legislation ... does not allow automatic acquisition of Czech citizenship through foreigner's marriageirrespective of his/her sexwith a Czech citizen. It means the contracting marriage itself does not lead to acquisition of Czech citizenship and a foreigner, if he/she wants to acquire the citizenship, must apply for Czech citizenship and must meet conditions provided by the Citizenship Law for conferment of Czech citizenship.
For information on the conditions referred to in the above citation, whether they may be waived, and the process to apply for Czech citizenship, please consult the letter.
Page 2 of the letter states:
Foreigners who marry Czech citizens, irrespective of their sex, are entitled to permanent stay in the territory of the Czech Republic provided a permanent stay permit is issued by the Ministry of Interior of the Czech Republic. The marriagethe family unificationis a statutory reason for granting a permanent residence permit.
For information on the application process for a permanent residence permit, please consult the letter.
