In an interview on 23 October 2000, the assistant to the Director of the Belize Immigration and Nationality Department stated that residents of Belize have the right to live in the country, to work, to circulate freely and to apply for citizenship after five years of residency. There is no time limit for a resident of Belize to be absent from the county before he or she risks losing Belizian residency status (ibid.). The parents of a child born in Belize do not have an automatic right to residency in Belize (ibid.). They can apply for residency after spending one year legally in the country (ibid.).
