The following information was provided by an official of the Office of the Republic of Croatia in Ottawa and it is based on the assumption that the ethnic Croats reside outside of Croatia (4 Jan. 1994). Ethnic Croats from the former Yugoslavia can secure Croatian rights only as citizens of Croatia. They cannot apply for citizenship from within Croatia. According to the official, they must apply to the nearest Office of the Republic of Croatia. The official noted that the easiest way for ethnic Croats from the former Yugoslavia to obtain Croatian citizenship is to prove that they have relatives who are residents of Croatia. They can obtain this proof by writing to the relatives to confirm the relationship.
