The German military will continue to use Uzbekistan's Termez air base despite the withdrawal of international forces from Afghanistan.
German Ambassador to Uzbekistan Neithart Hoefer-Wissing said on January 30 in Tashkent that Germany's continued use of the base comes from an agreement signed in September with the Uzbek government.
German troops use the base – which is located on the border with Afghanistan – to resupply troops operating in Afghanistan.
The base is used for noncombat purposes.
German forces have operated at the Termez base since shortly after the NATO-led intervention in Afghanistan.
Hoefer-Wissing said Germany and Uzbekistan had extended "cooperation that began with the introduction of international coalition forces in Afghanistan."
The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) ended its mission in Afghanistan in December and a new NATO-led noncombat operation, Resolute Support, began on January 1 with some foreign 12,500 troops set to train Afghan security forces.
Germany has some 850 troops in Afghanistan.
