The following information was provided during a 25 May 1998 telephone interview with the deputy director of the department of electoral statistics at the National Civilian Registry (Sub-jefe de computo del Registro nacional de las personas), a section of Honduras' Supreme Electoral Tribunal (Tribunal Supremo ElectoralTSE), based in Tegucigalpa.
Elections are held in Honduras on the last Sunday of November every four years. In 1989, the elected Mayor of La Ceiba was Antonio Leva of the National Party (Partido Nacional). He was elected on 26 November 1989 and took office on 27 January 1990. The governor of the Department of Atlántida (where La Ceiba is located) from 1990 to 1994 was Abraham Mejía Griffin from the National Party.
In 1993, the elected Mayor of La Ceiba was Margarita Dip of the Liberal Party (Partido Liberal). She was elected on 28 November 1993 and took office on 27 January 1994. The governor of the Department of Atlántida from 1994 to 1997 was Adalberto Girón Romero from the Liberal Party. He was reelected for another four year term in the last national elections held in November 1997.
In 1997, the elected Mayor for the city of La Ceiba was Gonzalo Rivera of the Liberal Party. He was elected on 30 November 1997 and took office on 27 January 1998.
The deputy director said that no violent incidents occurred during municipal elections in La Ceiba which he described as "a very peaceful city." However, a 1989 Central America Report article states that "despite the extra precautions, two bombs exploded in mid-November at the National Election Board (TNE) offices in La Ceiba and Tegucigalpa. ... Under the pretext of pre-election security, the Armed Forces conducted searches of the homes of La Ceiba university students" (1 Dec. 1989, 373).
No information could be found on similar incidents during the 1993 and 1997 national elections.
