For the response of the Italian embassy in Ottawa to the above-mentioned question, please consult the attached 5 September 1996 letter on the interpretation of Italian law over bilateral agreements and an English translation, provided by the embassy, on the revised citizenship laws of 1992.

Please note that the attachments do not directly answer the above-mentioned question, but rather provide general legislation that would be used in determining the eligibility for citizenship. Please consult Response to Information Request ITA24401.E of 30 August 1996 for an official translation of excerpts from Italian Citizenship: Internal and International Aspects, including the "Agreement on Citizenship between the Italian Republic and the Argentine Republic - Buenos Aires, 29 October 1971", and the "Agreement between Italy and Argentina - Buenos Aires, 8 August 1938 and corresponding exchange of notes of 20 April 1939", which apply to Argentines holding Italian citizenship and Italians holding Argentine citizenship.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
