An Argentinian prosecutor who accused President Cristina Fernandez of involvement in a plot to cover up Iran's alleged role in the country's worst terrorist attack has been found dead.

Authorities said Alberto Nisman's body was found in the bathroom of his apartment on January 18 with a gunshot wound.

Nisman was investigating the 1994 bombing of a Jewish center in Buenos Aires in which 85 people died.

Last week, Nisman alleged Fernandez and other officials had opened a secret back channel to Iranian suspects.

He was due to give evidence at a congressional committee hearing on January 19 to outline his accusations, dismissed as "ridiculous" by the president's spokesman.

Argentinian prosecutors have accused Tehran of planning and financing the attack and the Lebanese militant group Hizballah of carrying it out.

Iran dismissed the allegations as "baseless."
