Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said the Russian and U.S. presidents have agreed to build upon their meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly and look for ways to fight the Islamic State (IS) group.

Lavrov spoke to RT television channel on September 29, after Vladimir Putin and Barack Obama held their first meeting in two years.

Lavrov described the discussion as "very constructive," saying it touched upon "the possibilities for the United States and Russia to cooperate closely" on Syria.

The Russian minister said the two leaders "agreed that our common goal is to defeat" the IS militants.

"Both Russia and the United States are absolutely determined not to allow them to succeed," Lavrov added.

The United States has criticized the Kremlin for bolstering Syrian President Bashar al-Assad with advanced weaponry, aircraft, and military personnel.
