According to the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) publication Legal and Social Conditions for Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Western European Countries, "the Danish Social Assistance Act makes no distinction on the basis of nationality. Danish citizens, recognised refugees and immigrants are entitled to the same benefits if they are unable to support themselves" (Jan. 1997). The Danish Refugee Council describes itself as a "private independent organisation whose aim is to protect refugees from persecution and promote lasting solutions to refugee problems on the basis of humanitarian principles and the human rights" (DRC 8 July 1997).

Please see the DRC attachment for further information on social conditions and assistance available to refugees in Denmark.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
