According to the May 1998 Travel Information Manual (TIM), a visitor, including a Canadian citizen, needs a passport to travel to Ecuador (127). A visitor's visa is not required if he/she plans to travel in Ecuador for less than 90 days (ibid.). This information was corroborated by an official at the Embassy of Ecuador in Ottawa during a 11 May 1998 telephone interview. However, the representative added that the Canadian citizen would need to apply for a visa before leaving Canada if he/she were planning to stay in Ecuador for a period exceeding 90 days. For these cases, she stated that the visa most commonly issued to Canadians is the XII 9 Visa which allows the individual to stay in Ecuador for a period of up to 180 days.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
