According to a M2 Presswire report, in January 2001, Sanaa Khalil, Counsellor of the Egyptian Ministry of Justice, stated at a meeting of the Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women that: "any physical offence [against a woman] was punishable, even if it was committed by a woman's family member" (22 Jan. 2001). No further information on the state protection available to women who suffer violence from family members could be found among the sources consulted.

Further information on domestic violence and references to applicable articles of the Egyptian Penal Code can be found in EGY36872.E of 23 May 2001.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints.
