TEHRAN (Reuters) – Iran's defeated presidential candidate Mehdi Karrubi has said that some of those detained after the country's disputed June presidential vote had been raped in detention, according to his website.

"Some senior officials told me that ... really shameful issues.... Some young male detainees were raped ... [and] also some young female detainees were raped in a way that would have caused serious injuries," the website quoted Karrubi as saying.

The text comes from a letter Karrubi wrote 10 days ago to Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, the head of a powerful Iranian arbitration body.
