According to the Times World Atlas, the distance between Kas and Megísti (Kastellorizo(n)/Meis) is only a few kilometers (1994, plate 36). Although information on whether it is possibile to swim the distance between the island and the mainland could not be found among the sources consulted by the DIRB, Turkey: A Travel Surival Kit states that one can charter a fishing boat from Kas to go to Meis for US$50, or pay an individual roundtrip fare of US$6 (1993, 448). For a comparison of relative costs, please note that the guide also states that a simple lunch will cost US$2-3, while a several course meal in a budget restaurant will cost US$5-6 (ibid., 201)

Also attached is a media report of illegal alien smuggling occuring near the island and tourist information on visa procedures for people entering or leaving Meis.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
