Israel has sent a protest note to Kyrgyzstan's Foreign Ministry regarding the public desecration of an Israeli flag by a Kyrgyz lawmaker.

The note was sent by officials at the Israeli Embassy in Astana, Kazakhstan, as Israel does not have a diplomatic presence in Bishkek.

According to the officials, the note – written by the Israeli ambassador to Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, Eliyau Tasman – expressed concern regarding the actions of Kyrgyz lawmaker Tursunbai Bakir-Uulu.

At a press conference on August 4, Bakir-Uulu ripped up an Israeli flag as he condemned Israel's military operations against Hamas in Gaza.

Tasman's note demanded an investigation into the incident.

In 2009, Bakir-Uulu tried to burn an Israeli flag at a similar public action.

Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry officials told RFE/RL that they had not yet received the note.
