A 21 October 1998 facsimile sent to the Research Directorate by the president of the Hungarian Helsinki Committee in Bucharest states:

There have been gossips about cases of political blackmail and corruption within the Hungarian judiciary, however, no one has initiated legal action in connection with them. A lawsuit is in progress against Laszlo Boldvai, an MP of the Socialist Party, however, he is charged with the mismanagement of state money.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
