Kirill arrived in Warsaw on August 16 at the start of a four-day visit, the first ever by a head of the Russian Orthodox Church to the largely Roman Catholic country.

The Russian Orthodox patriarch and the head of Poland's Roman Catholic Church, Archbishop Jozef Michalik are to sign a joint message on August 17 calling on Poles and Russians to forgive each other for the dark pages of their shared history.

Kirill met Catholic Church leaders in the episcopate in Warsaw, and later Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski, who said that dialogue was a step towards reconciliation.
