In a telephone interview on 27 January 1997, the general secretary of the Geneva Initiative on Psychiatry in Holersum, The Netherlands, an organization that opposes the political use of psychiatry, provided the following information. The general secretary has not heard any reports from 1990 to present indicating that Yugoslav citizens have been confined to psychiatric institutions by state-employed psychiatrists, or by psychiatrists acting on instructions from the authorities, because of those citizens' political opinions or acts. The general secretary would not discount the possibility that some psychiatrists may have abused their power (by confining people to psychiatric institutions or treating them against their will) for personal or political reasons.
