The IRBDC has no currently available information on the treatment, in the post-Ceausescu time, of Romanian citizens whose family members have emigrated to western countries. According to the attached documentation from the Department of External Affairs, "there are no penalties for return to Romania after an illegal departure or for overstaying a legal departure". Whether or not this applies to relatives is not known.
