A detailed overview of societal attitudes towards gays and bisexuals in Chile or an account of gay-oriented public life in Chile could not be prepared within the constraints of this Response. Please find attached two recent articles on the advocacy of legal reforms for fighting discrimination and the publication of the first Chilean gay newspaper. These add to information provided in CHL40645.E of 21 March 2003 and earlier Responses.
CHL40465.E includes references to the first annual report published at the end of 2002 by the Santiago-based Movement of Homosexual Integration and Liberation (Movimiento de Integración y Liberación Homosexual, MOVILH). The report includes a description of the problems and advances faced by sexual minorities in Chile.
MOVILH provides on its Website information about publications, places, activities, organizations and public figures linked to sexual minorities in Chile. Their Website, in Spanish, can be found at
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
