Officials in Azerbaijan's breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh say Azerbaijani forces killed one of its soldiers.

Nagorno-Karabakh's de facto Defense Ministry in a statement on May 21 said its soldier, 20-year-old Artur Oganjanian, was killed by Azerbaijani troops on May 20.

Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry said that its forces had nothing to do with the soldier's death.

Armenia-backed separatists seized Nagorno-Karabakh and several districts around it from Azerbaijan in a war that killed 30,000 people in the 1990s.

A truce was signed in 1994, but there is still sporadic violence.

Years of internationally mediated talks have failed to resolve the conflict.
