No information on whether the Polisario Front is present in the Western Sahara particularly in Layoune and S'Mara, could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.
However, Sahara Press Service (SPS) reported on 12 October 2000 that a Sahrawi who had tried to join up with the Polisario Front from Western Sahara on 27 September 2000 was sentenced to four years in prison. More than twenty young people tried reportedly to [translation] "escape the occupation" (ibid.). Twelve of them are now in prison and the Moroccan security forces are actively looking for the others (ibid.).
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of additional sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
