It has been reported that any Iranians who took part in 2009 protests against the reelection of President Mahmud Ahmadinejad will be banned from studying at university.

Quoted by the official IRNA news agency, Iran's Science and Education Minister Kamran Daneshjou said that if Tehran did not take such action, the government would find it difficult to explain how antigovernment protesters had been admitted to Iranian universities.

In recent years, reform-minded university professors and students critical of the Iranian establishment have come under increasing pressure.

A number of liberal professors are said to have been forced to retire and dozens of student activists have been banned from classes and sentenced to prison.
