TBILISI – Georgia's Interior Ministry says it has arrested a senior official in the Tbilisi mayor's office on corruption charges.

The ministry said in a statement on February 11 that Jokia Bodokia, chief of the supervisory service administration in the Tbilisi mayor's office, was arrested on suspicion of receiving a $50,000 bribe from a company in exchange for a hotel construction permit in the Georgian capital.

Tbilisi Mayor Davit Narmania said his office is "interested in establishing the objective truth in this case" and would cooperate with the investigation.

At a government session on February 12, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said the authorities would "immediately eradicate" corruption cases.
