The March 2008 report on Craiova by the Council of Europe (COE) and the European Commission (EC) states that in 2002, 8,820 Roma constituted 2.91 percent of Craiova's population of approximately 400,000 (2). The report states that "Several minority groups ... as well as around 10 percent Roma, are represented traditionally in Craiova, and have their own cultural associations of the minorities and representatives of the Local Council and the different departments of the Municipality" (COE/EC Mar. 2008, 3). However, the report also states that Roma in Craiova do not have representatives on city council (ibid., 6).
The mayor of Craiova is Antonie Solomon (Rompres 25 Oct. 2008; National Courrier 27 Apr. 2009).
Information on the name of a leader of Roma in Craiova, whether a complaints department exists on city council and whether Romanian or international organizations assist Roma could not be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.
