Police have arrested a man in western Germany suspected of being a member of the extremist Islamic State group.

The man, identified as Nils D., was arrested on January 10 in the city of Dinslaken.

Officials said the suspect, who is 24, has not been linked to any definite plans for a terror attack.

They said he had been under surveillance by German security forces

since early 2014 on suspicion he was preparing a terrorist attack.

German prosecutors say Nils D. traveled to Syria in 2013 and met with IS members.

He returned to Germany in November.

Nils D. is reportedly a cousin of a German citizen who was killed fighting in Syria in August.

The suspect is expected to appear before a judge on January 11 to be charged.

He could be detained during an investigation.
