WASHINGTON – The wife of Robert Levinson, an American who disappeared some seven years ago during a trip to Iran's Kish Island, has confirmed that he was working at the time for the CIA, the U.S. intelligence agency.
Christine Levinson told RFE/RL that she was aware her husband was working as a CIA contractor.
She said her husband was also a private investigator at the time.
U.S. officials have denied Levinson worked for the government.
Iran has said it is not holding Levinson.
Christine Levinson said the U.S. should allow an intermediary to work with Iran to bring her husband home.
Levinson has not been in contact with his family since he went missing in 2007.
Pictures showing him in captivity were e-mailed to the family in 2011.
His wife said she believes he is still alive.
