A court in Kazakhstan's western city of Oral has ordered a British national to spend two months in pretrial detention on molestation and pornography charges.

In mid-January, a local woman complained to police, saying that an unknown man had filmed her teenage daughter in a pornographic manner.

Investigations led to 38-year-old Peter Barokh, who police say managed to destroy several flash sticks in a microwave oven in his hotel room when police arrived to question him.

He was detained on February 7.

Two security officers in the hotel were fired in the wake of the scandal.

If found guilty, Barokh faces up to nine years in jail.

Some 2,000 local citizens signed an online petition urging authorities to thoroughly investigate the case.
