Police in the Indian portion of Kashmir say at least eight people were killed and others have been seriously injured in an attack by suspected separatist rebels on a police station.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack in the town of Hiranagar in the Jammu region on September 26.

Police are quoted as saying the attackers were dressed in Indian Army uniforms.

The militants are reported to have hijacked a truck to make their escape, and later engaged security forces in a gunfight in another area.

Both India and Pakistan claim Kashmir in its entirety.

India has accused Pakistan of backing Islamist militants who have been fighting Indian rule in Kashmir for more than two decades.
