Muslim cleric Abu Qatada after his release on bail by a U.K. court in November
A military court in Jordan has denied bail to radical Muslim preacher Abu Qatada, who faces terror charges in Jordan following his deportation earlier this month from Britain.
Abu Qatada's lawyer, Tayseer Thiab, confirmed on July 21 that the court rejected bail but said he would sit with his client to decide the next step.
The 53-year-old cleric was convicted in absentia of conspiring to carry out terrorist attacks against Israelis, Americans, and other Westerners in Jordan in two alleged foiled plots in 1999 and 2000 but is receiving a new trial.
On his first court appearance in Jordan on July 7, Qatada was charged with "conspiracy to carry out terrorist acts."
He pleaded not guilty.
Qatada is currently in the Muwaqqar prison, a maximum security facility outside the Jordanian capital, Amman.
