Edín Rodelmiro Maas Bol, Radio Punto

ATTACKED

Unidentified individuals fired gunshots at the home of journalist Edín Rodelmiro Maas Bol moments after he had entered the house in Cobán, Alta Verapaz province, the reporter told CPJ.

Unknown assailants fired at least nine shots as they drove by Maas' house at around 2 a.m., the daily Prensa Libre said. Mass, correspondent in Cobán for the Guatemala City-based Radio Punto and sports commentator for the local radio station La Sabrosona, said that the house suffered minor damages.

Maas said he had not received previous threats, and didn't know why his home was attacked. The radio reporter filed a complaint with local authorities and asked for police protection, which he said he has not yet received.

The journalist's brother, Eduardo Maas Bol who was also a correspondent for Radio Punto, was shot to death in September 2006. A suspect accused of killing him is now standing trial.
