No reports of threats or attacks against former members of the FMLN who attempt to pursue investigations into alleged death squad killings of family members, either in Chalatenango or elsewhere in El Salvador, could be found among the documentary sources consulted by Research Directorate. However, in a letter dated 15 February 2000, the Director of the Comite de Familiares de Victimas de las Violaciones de los Derechos Humanos de El Salvador "Manuella Garcia Villas" (CODEFAM), a non-governmental organization based in San Salvador that works with individuals whose family members disappeared or were subjected to human rights violations during the civil war, stated that his organization has been involved in two separate cases, one in San Vicente, the other in San Salvador, where individuals acting as witnesses in an investigation of the disappearance of family members have been subjected to threats by unidentified persons. In a separate 15 February 2000 interview, the Director of CODEFAM stated that, in one of these two cases, the target of such threats was a former FMLN combatant.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
