Prosecutors in Hungary have detained a former senior communist official in connection with the violent suppression of the country's 1956 anti-Soviet uprising.
Bela Biszku, 90, was named interior minister in the government of Janos Kadar that was set up after the uprising failed.
He is accused of being a "key designer" and implementer of the reprisals, in which large numbers of civilians were killed.
In particular, Biszku is suspected in connection with the killings of 46 civilians in the town of Salgotajan.
Acting Budapest prosecutor Tibor Ibolya said Biszku has denied the accusations against him. Biszku is the only surviving member of the Communist Party executive committee
