A 28 April 1998 letter received from an official at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea states that
[...] in a hypothetical case of a person, who for example is a Chinese citizen but of Korean ancestry, and who wishes to attain Korean nationality [...] The answer is that even if a person can trace their forebears to Korea, this does not automatically qualify them.
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
