According the a representative of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Ottawa, Aufenhaltserlaubnis is a generic term refering to residence permits in general (21 July 1993). Two kinds of residence permits are currently issued in Germany: the unlimited residence permit or Aufenhaltsgehnemigung, delivered to temporary residents for a period of one to two years, and the unlimited residence permit or Aufenhaltsberechtigung, delivered to people who have lived in Germany for more than five years (Ibid.).
