A report issued by the top U.S. watchdog for reconstruction in Afghanistan says the U.S. military failed to stop construction on a $14.7 million warehouse facility in southern Afghanistan, despite delays that made it clear the buildings would barely be used by coalition forces.
The July 20 report by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) says the facility includes four massive warehouses, an administration building, and other unspecified supporting facilities at Kandahar Air Field.
It is the latest in a series of reports documenting wasted U.S. taxpayer funds in Afghanistan.
It says the facility was designed for the government's Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), which supplies equipment to U.S. troops.
But it says the facility was not delivered until February 3, 2014, and was never used by the DLA.
The SIGAR report also says that "with a few minor exceptions," the rest of the U.S. military never used the facility.
