An official at the Embassy of the Republic of Hungary in Ottawa stated in an 8 January 1997 telephone interview that a Hungarian citizen can hold the citizenship of another country, including the citizenship of Israel, without losing his/her Hungarian citizenship. This was also the case before the 1 June 1993 citizenship law was adopted (ibid.).

For an update on the current status of Hungarian citizenship legislation, please refer to the attached excerpts on Hungarian citizenship of the March 1996 issue of the European Bulletin on Nationality. Also attached please find relevant excerpts from the 1 June 1993 Law on Hungarian citizenship.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
