The United Nations Peacebuilding Commission has congratulated the Government and people of Liberia for the peaceful conduct of their senatorial elections which took place on 20 December.

In a statement issued by its Liberia configuration, the Commission commended the country's National Elections Commission for organizing the elections under challenging circumstances, particularly in the midst of difficulties posed by the Ebola crisis.

Welcoming Liberia's efforts thus far to combat the Ebola outbreak, the Commission urged the international community, and in particular, countries in the region, to bolster affected countries in their response to the crisis.

The Commission's Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone configurations would continue to monitor the long-term impacts of the Ebola outbreak on affected countries, the statement said.

Beyond the elections, the Commission expressed its intention to continue to support Liberia on its path towards long-term peace and stability, in particular in the areas of justice and security, national reconciliation and the rule of law.
