Polling station in Pristina for Kosovo's parliamentary elections on June 8, 2014
The ruling Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) has declared victory in Kosovo's June 8 parliamentary elections.
The party's deputy leader, Kadri Veseli, told a news conference in Pristina late on June 8: "Our party is the biggest winner of the national election."
The declaration comes as initial official results showed the party of caretaker Prime Minister Hashim Thaci with a narrow lead over the opposition Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK).
Turnout was about 43 percent of eligible voters. That is seen as low in a country where voters are frustrated by widespread corruption, poverty, and an official unemployment rate of 35 percent.
Political analysts say even if the final results confirm victory for Thaci's party, he still will need to form a coalition government with smaller parties and ethnic Serbs to secure his third term as prime minister.
