Moldova's top prosecutor has announced his resignation a day after parliament voted to streamline Moldova's prosecution service.
Speaking to lawmakers in Chisinau on February 26, Prosecutor-General Corneliu Gurin said he would step down officially on March 1, less than three weeks before his five-year term is due to expire.
On February 25, lawmakers voted in favor of combining an anticorruption office and another agency for special cases as part of judicial reforms the government has promised.
The changes, which come into force on August 1, also limit the powers of the prosecutor-general, who will no longer be appointed by parliament, but by the country's president.
Lawmakers from the opposition pro-Russia Socialists Party walked out of the parliamentary session on February 25.
Moldova has been rocked by political instability since more than $1 billion disappeared from three banks before parliamentary elections in November.
